Compassion Project
A Call To Action For New York State Nurses
The Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses (SPAN) proudly announces the launch of the Compassion Project, a groundbreaking campaign aimed at supporting all New York State nurses affected by substance use disorder. With 1 in 5 nurses facing these challenges, it is critical to dismantle the stigma surrounding substance use and foster an environment of compassion and support.
The Compassion Project is an universal call to action for nurses and their colleagues to unite in creating a supportive workplace culture. Nurses often serve as the first responders to their colleagues in need, yet many hesitate to seek help due to fear of judgment. The Compassion Project aims to change that narrative.
The Compassion Project encourages nurses and their colleagues to take the Compassion Project Pledge, which includes commitments to:
- Create a safe space to reach out to co-workers and inquire about their well-being.
- Challenge stigma in the workplace and use non-stigmatizing language.
- Actively listen and offer support to peers in their struggles.
- Prioritize a healthy work-life balance that nurtures well-being.
- Contact SPAN for help with substance use at 800-457-7261, SPAN or SPAN@NYSNA.org.
- Share the Compassion Project Toolkit and promote Recovery Ready Workplace initiatives.
